The castle hotel has a quirky, fantasy feel, and we got a friendly welcome. I liked the huge bed, lake-view terrace, very clean pool, in-room fridge, free WiFi, and on-site parking. The room was a good size, though the bed was hard and the sheets were thin and worn. The jacuzzi didn’t work, and neither did the fan, so the room got very hot at night. The location was a drawback. It’s about a 20m drive from the lake, and traffic and parking in Valle were awful. I’d suggest staying in the centre or near the lake, somewhere walkable that also has parking. We barely slept because a couple were fighting at 2am and blasting music at a brain-splitting volume for a couple of hours. Staff said it was the neighbours, but we could hear the words and it was definitely one of the guests at the resort. My boyfriend tried to reach hotel staff, who didn’t answer. The next day they insisted they hadn’t heard anything. That left the whole stay disappointing. Wouldn’t recommend.

Our host was fantastic. They recommended food, called taxis into centro, helped with my terrible Spanish, and even arranged for beers from the local store to be brought to our room. The locals were friendly, too. You can catch a collectivo to and from Centro quickly and easily, or take a taxi, which takes around 10-15 minutes. The castle Hotel is really quirky, with Game of Thrones-style decor and a life-sized Ser Gregor. It felt medieval and just cool, especially for a nerd like me. I stayed in a balcony room overlooking the lake, and they’d used blue lights to cut down on mosquitoes and other flying friends out there. The drive up might be alarming, with building work going on nearby and the area in need of some regeneration, but we had a fantastic 3 day stay. I’ll be back very soon!

Karina was so generous and helpful, made me feel at home, and answered all my questions. I had an excellent stay at Hotel Castillo del Ray and would recommend it if you’re staying in Valle de Bravo. It’s easy to get to by Collectivo, taxi, or bus to Mexico City.
