In all my years of travelling, I've never had such a bizarre experience. We paid for a “private double room with a shared bathroom,” listed as “Matrimonio privado con baño compartido.” Instead, our double bed was in one section, with a wall separating it from another room containing two beds. The people staying there had to walk straight through our space to reach it. How is that private? We were trying to relax in bed while strangers came right through our room to get to what they called their private room, which was really just part of ours. It was a dormitory. Make it make sense. The receptionist said it counted as a private room, just not totally private. By that logic, you might as well call buses private taxis. When we asked for a key to lock the room, she said we couldn't have one because it wasn't a private room...
