Casa Hortencias

We paid US$6,000 for ten nights, and it was absolutely not worth it. We had to leave after just one day for our health, but the rental manager refused to offer any kind of refund. Afterward, it seemed the owner or manager had removed the listing from TripAdvisor, though it was still on the Jefferey Hill Vacation Rentals website. The black mold on the living room ceiling was the last straw. We noticed large patches the next morning. Someone seemed to have painted over it, but the paint was peeling. I have asthma, and the mildew odor was so strong I ended up sleeping on a rooftop patio lounger. Staying in a house with black mold is a health risk. The odor was noticeable as soon as we arrived. The host or manager said the living room AC had stopped working. We tried fans and open windows, but the smell lingered for our whole stay. The house was filthy and dusty, with poor attention to detail from the cleaning crew. There were coffee grounds in the pot from the previous guest, completely moldy, odd orange and red stains on the sheets, and dust and cobwebs everywhere. Dead bugs were left on the shower window. The patio furniture was old and weathered. The pool was cold when we arrived, even though the managers knew well in advance when we were coming and had time to warm it. The rooftop patio was stained and dirty, and the BBQ still had food left over from whoever used it last. From the balcony, we could see the house next door, where up to six feral dogs barked day and night and defecated all over the neighboring patio. That was what we saw when we tried to enjoy our own patio. The neighborhood itself felt pretty ghetto. The Casa Hortencias photos didn’t accurately show the house’s dilapidated condition, and many of the Google photos weren’t even of this property. Do yourself a favor and book elsewhere unless you want to risk breathing in black mold.
