My boyfriend and I booked one night through Avion with points as part of his birthday trip. Avion uses Expedia for bookings. Before check-in time, we went to the lobby to ask if we could leave our bags while we explored. The woman at the desk asked for our reservation number, then said the hotel didn’t accept online bookings and only took reservations through WhatsApp. We called our credit card company to sort it out and spent nearly two hours on the phone with Avion. The front desk worker was rude and unhelpful, even though we were kind to her. Avion found a Spanish translator to call the hotel, but the translator said the worker refused to speak with them. After that, she gave us dirty looks, hid from us, and ignored us while we dealt with the card company. She wouldn’t even let me use the bathroom. Look elsewhere if you’re thinking about Casa Mission. The staff were rude, and they keep a huge turtle in a tiny tank.

The noise was constant and deafening. Families of up to 15 people were often staying in rooms with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and the resulting chaos was unbearable. Music went late into the night, rooftop parties carried on until 3 a.m., and voices bounced around the central courtyard. Complaining to management didn’t help. They mocked us, treated it like a joke, and did nothing. Staff didn’t speak English, and attempts to communicate brought excuses and finger-pointing. Check-in was supposed to be at 3 p.m., but we weren’t let into the property until almost 7. Once inside, the dirt was appalling. It felt like the place hadn’t been properly maintained in years. There were cockroaches, ants, and bedbugs around the property, and we couldn’t sleep without feeling uneasy. The stove was too filthy to use, and there weren’t any dishes. There was no internet, and the advertised TVs didn’t work. The bathrooms had mold, a nauseating smell, and visible neglect. The mattresses felt rock-hard, as though they were 20 years old, and the sheets were so worn and thin they were almost see-through. The whole property is painted a glaring, garish bright blue inside and out. Anything painted white was grimy and looked untouched for more than a decade. It’s decent-looking from a distance, but up close it’s a nightmare. I took photos of the dirt, mold, and general disrepair. This was an exercise in frustration and discomfort, not just a bad rental. La Mission Casa is mismanaged and unbearable to stay in. I strongly urge anyone considering it to look elsewhere and avoid it at all costs.

The staff are friendly and helpful, and for the price this is an excellent choice. It’s affordable, right in the center, close to shops, and within walking distance of the beach. The place has the basics you need, including cable TV, hot water, and cleaning. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a reasonably priced stay. I’m here for work about 15 days every four months, and I find it comfortable with good service for the money. It’s around five blocks from Pitillal’s main square, though the area is quiet. I’m a light sleeper and usually carry my own towels and pillowcases when I can, so I’d suggest bringing earplugs.

I wouldn’t recommend booking here. On January 31, I booked through HOPPER.com for January 31 to February 8, after accidentally reserving just one day at OYO hotel on HOPPER.com for $67.95. I was worried I wouldn’t find another place at that point, so I made the longer booking for $689.40. When I arrived, the hotel said there were no rooms available. It was extremely stressful, especially since it was my first time in Mexico. I cancelled through HOPPER.com and was told the money would take 5 to 7 days to come back. Then I checked my account and saw the hotel had charged both amounts. I still haven’t received any refund for a room they said wasn’t available and that I never stayed in.

The rooftop pool is the one redeeming feature. The compound is gated and locked, too. But the bathroom smelled moldy, and the shower door track was filthy. The bed was a hard spring mattress with no padding, and the sheets were threadbare and see-through. There was no housekeeping. The walls looked like children had painted them, and the AC was so loud it woke me up at night.
