You can walk to restaurants, shops, bars, cafés, and all the action from Hotel Mesones 49. If being right in the center of San Miguel de Allende is your priority, the location is a real winner. Beyond that address, I found little to like. Reception staff were either wonderfully helpful or seemed half-asleep and confused, depending on who was there. When we arrived, we got a key and directions up a narrow staircase, along a tight hallway cluttered with storage and unattractive souvenirs, then into a rather depressing restaurant at the back. We didn’t eat there, so I can’t speak to the food, but the atmosphere didn’t draw us in. Our room was clean and reasonably comfortable, though some design choices were odd. The black floor hides things a little too well. There’s also a step right behind the bathroom sink, which could make you fall if you lean back or take a step without looking. That’s a serious flaw that should be fixed. During our stay we passed many more charming hotels close to the center, with a much warmer, more inviting feel. This place has the location and very little else to justify the price. I wouldn’t stay again.

I can’t recommend this place. Room #4 was in a narrow, cramped walkway, next to housekeeping and opposite the restaurant kitchen, even though the hotel wasn’t even 20% occupied. Its only window didn’t open. The linens and towels were decent, but there was too much room deodorizer and no hair dryer. The restaurant kept inconsistent hours. After hours, the front desk staff napped on a bench in the walkway. They wouldn’t make coffee before 7 am, and one morning they served cold coffee left over from the night before. I can’t see why we got that room unless it was because we were traveling on United Points. We chose the place because of its 9.0 rating on Hotels.United.com, which made this worse.

A very nice hotel in an incredible location, but the staff were the real highlight. They were attentive, caring, friendly, and welcoming, just something out of this world. I’ve stayed at hotels in higher categories, and their staff don’t come close to the people here.

I’ve visited San Miguel de Allende five times and stayed in different hotels each time, all at a similar price and in similar locations. This was the best one. We stayed four nights, and it was peaceful, with comfortable beds and a great location. The restaurant and cleaning staff were very friendly. The front door staff were less so, the only negative.

Amazing location and great value. The rooms are old but spacious and clean, with great AC. The restaurant, coffee shop, and bar were good, and the front desk staff were great.
