We left at 10:15 a.m. without ever meeting the owner. We’d asked the very nervous young female manager to have the owner call us, but the two numbers on the business card, including the cell number, didn’t work from our phones. She said she managed to reach the owner from a landline and that they’d come the next day. This was during our stay with a friend for Dias de Los Muertos last week. My friend noticed someone had gone through his luggage and moved our passports. When we checked our rooms for missing cash, my $50 bill was gone and he was missing 920 pesos. We spoke with the manager but didn’t get anywhere. Stay away from this place!!

The rooftop has a sunny line for laundry, so bring a bar of laundry soap. Earplugs are useful too, both for the rumbling traffic and for the day staff chatting outside your room while you’re trying to have a siesta. The night porter was terrific. The daytime staff were welcoming, though they seemed to have trouble reading and interpreting the logbook. La Mexicana was a nice place to stay overall, but the staff’s actions took away from the experience.

The terrace has a lovely view, and the service people were nice. It’s a lovely place in San Miguel de Allende. Just be aware that some rooms don’t have proper lighting, and that should be made clear when you book.

There are plenty of better places nearby. I tried to check in and found out, to my surprise, that it was cash only for the weekend. The receptionist said the card terminal wasn’t working, and when I offered to pay at checkout, they told me it still wouldn’t work the next day. Unbelievable….
