Hotel San Francisco

The buffet room was nice and the food was good, but they only include breakfast for adults, not children, for some reason. The room walls were dirty and smelled of cigarettes or something, and the door wasn't solid. Someone could kick it open easily. The TV only had Spanish soap operas. At night there's a disco nearby with loud music, and if you walk outside looking for food, watch out, some guys are looking for money too. I stayed one night. It wasn't too bad for that, but I'd give it a full star if they'd upgraded everything.

The cleaning staff were very accommodating, and changing rooms made the second night much better. We spent two nights at San Francisco. The first was pretty bad because the shower leaked and rain came in through the window. We booked on Agoda a couple of weeks before arriving, as we usually do, so I'm not sure why we got that room. Breakfast was complimentary and okay, though I hadn't realized staff were expected to be tipped. I probably wouldn't book here again.

The staff were so friendly, and I really loved this hotel. The restaurant food was delicious and the prices weren't high. The pool was nice, and the weather was perfect for a late-night swim. My room was big and very clean, with an enormous comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. There was lots of water in the shower, and the AC cooled perfectly. I also loved the huge desk, with plenty of space to work on the computer, draw, or write.

The cleaning and kitchen staff were the bright spots for me. The cleaners were wonderful, accommodating, and just nice. Gloria, a young woman whose I.D. said "practicante," helped me with breakfast and surprised me with her smile and genuine willingness to serve. I believe she was training and hadn't yet picked up the others' horrible attitude. On another morning, I asked four waiters for a slice of ham for my toast, and got the impression that "let me see," "it's not possible," or "no" are the hotel's favorite responses. During my nearly week-long stay, I couldn't get a single employee to smile or even pretend they were glad to help, apart from Gloria. The front desk staff were usually flippant and unconcerned, looking at personal phones, cutting little papers with Wi-Fi codes, or chatting with colleagues instead of greeting guests. The halls are dim and the food is no better than at countless hole-in-the-wall places on the street. Management needs to rethink its training and hiring, maybe put the cleaning and kitchen people at the front desk and send the surly desk staff to clean rooms, so they learn some humility and customer service. If you're spending money on accommodation, go somewhere else. Places are all similar, but at San Francisco you know what level of service you'll get, while elsewhere it might turn out to be a nice surprise.
