Milcoapa

The place is beautiful and still worth a visit, but the little touches that once made it special seem to have disappeared. On our first stay years ago, there was coffee and sweet bread in the morning, plus flowers to make guests feel cared for. We came back because of good memories of the hospitality, facilities, and location, but the owners seem not to have kept basic things up to standard for the price. Our room’s shower leaked badly and made a mess, the big flat-screen TV didn’t work, the Wi-Fi was weak in some areas, and there were power cuts. A simple plate of chilaquiles cost $150: tortilla crisps in green salsa with two fried eggs and beans, without juice, fruit, or bread. I hope they improve enough to make us want to return.

For someone who wants Tepoztlan without the usual resort feel, Milcoapa is a great fit. It’s Juan’s family vacation home, remodeled into a collection of interesting rooms and suites. Juan, the owner, is well educated and interesting, has lived in the US, and has a lovely wife and baby. Tepoztlan is a really cool town, especially during Carnaval. I’d recommend the place to arty travelers who don’t want a typical gringo resort or one of the overly precious spa hotels around town.

Lots of beds in the great rooms, and the service was good.
