I visited Maya Tulum in late October during the quiet season, and the beaches were never crowded. My ocean view was stunning, the room service was quick, and the staff were kind. The food was good and affordable, too. It was a great stay.

We were very disappointed after traveling all the way from Greece. The hotel's location is very good, but the experience was traumatic. We were booked for 10 days and had to go to reception every day to ask for better room cleaning. We even bought bleach and cleaning products at a nearby supermarket just so we could sleep comfortably. The towels had coffee stains, and our private pool was just as unclean. Breakfast was omelets and scrambled eggs every day. We were told this was because the hotel had rented its restaurant to a private person.

The restaurant was the one bright spot during our four nights. The food was excellent, portions generous, and the staff there were amazing. The air conditioning worked, too. The rest of the hotel needs serious work, starting at reception. There were lizard droppings on the beds and in the shower, with no warning, so we covered our belongings with sheets. Cleanliness was questionable, and drinking water cost extra even though it should be included and refilled daily as in most hotels. The pool water didn't look changed or properly cared for. During a power and water outage, the hotel gave no explanation or compensation, just vague answers. I left disappointed and wouldn't recommend it.

Mosquitoes were everywhere. We got bitten more than 10 times on the way to our room, then at least 10 more times during a nap because the thatched roof did little to keep bugs out. I'm allergic, and enough bites can make my eyes swell shut. When I explained that, the staff smiled, shook their heads, blamed the recent rain and jungle, then sent me to a pharmacy to buy my own protection. They didn't offer nets or spray, and changing to a room with a solid roof was apparently impossible. Our private hot tub wasn't heated and was disgusting. They only cleaned the green slime after we asked, though by then we weren't going to swim in that mosquito pit anyway. The ocean section also smelled worse than anything I've ever encountered, and the water was an unappetizing red-brown, unlike what I expect of the Caribbean. We had no hot water for two hours after arrival and had to ask for it to be turned on. The attendant turned on all the sinks while fixing it, and one didn't drain, but he didn't seem concerned. Staff also tried to charge us the maximum for everything. We were quoted $200+ for a trip to Chicen Itza, which you can find on booking for [source text ends here].

We had three great days and nights of September weather, but there isn't much else good to report. We arrived at 2:50pm for a 3pm check-in and were told to wait an hour. The desk staff said we'd only just booked, even though we had confirmation from 11am that morning. I found the way she said it rude. We were also given a twin room instead of the queen we had reserved. By then I was too hot and sweaty to care. Over three days, the power kept cutting out, despite four beautiful days and three calm nights. I'm astonished they had no backup generator. The restaurant staff were great, but the food reminded me of better soup kitchens in homeless hostels. The private jacuzzi/pool seemed unhealthy. It clearly looked like it had been urinated in many times, and the water stung the chafing on my legs. I had no such reaction in the swimming pool, so I knew there was a problem with the private one. I won't be back, though everyone has different preferences.
