Hotel Palacio Canton

We arrived really early, but they made us wait until the 3 o’clock check-in. The rooms have hot water, great AC, and even an English TV channel to watch at night. The staff are friendly, though communication was hard because they know little English. It’s a unique, central place, within walking distance of lots of things. Everything was clean, though there was some mold on the walls. We were near the ADO, a scooter rental place, and the main square. I’d recommend renting a scooter for getting around town quickly. I have other reviews for places I visited in town and out of town, too.

Roaches everywhere!!!!!! The online pictures make this look like a nice boutique hotel, but in reality it’s very old, dirty, and has ZERO maintenance or hospitality. The pool was dirty. I asked them to clean it, and they said they were sorry but didn’t have the basic tools needed for the pool. The place is dark all the time, with the hallway and main entrance in total darkness at night. Room 1 on the first floor was infested with roaches and NOTHING worked. I had to change rooms, but at midnight I had no other option for where to go, even though I wanted to change hotels as soon as possible. The manager was incompetent and careless. The night front desk worker had no experience hosting guests. I asked what he did, and he replied, “I’m only the house vigilant.” There was nobody else in charge of hosting. I can’t believe the owner of a place in this tourist city doesn’t have a good manager looking after the property and the place they call a hotel.

For the price, this was a great surprise. It’s an economical option close to the town center, and as with many older buildings, parking is limited. The owners have clearly worked hard to modernize the place, and did a great job. It felt quiet, private, and safe, though the room locks were just doorknob locks, with no way to lock the door from inside. That made me uncomfortable. There are lots of dining options, but ask the front desk. We went out on our own the first night and were disappointed. The next day we asked for advice and were extremely impressed. Parking fits four or five cars depending on how they’re arranged. We’d stay again.

The garden and pool were a lovely oasis in the middle of a bustling city, with fun and interesting decorations everywhere. The staff were very helpful with everything, even getting us breakfast when we thought we might be late. The location is great, just two blocks north of the main square.
