I spent my birthday on a solo trip at Casa Yuma and honestly, the hospitality made the whole stay. Everyone from reception to the restaurant and bar was warm, attentive, and kind. At birthday dinner they surprised me with a chocolate dessert and a sparkler. Then at checkout, someone at the front desk checked that I’d received it. That kind of thoughtfulness really stayed with me. As a solo Black woman traveler, I felt safe, comfortable, and cared for the entire time. The staff made sure I felt accommodated, and that meant a lot. I also had two massages on the property, both relaxing and a great part of the retreat. The food was a pleasant surprise, since I’d seen mixed reviews beforehand. I loved everything I tried, especially the fish ceviche on my first day, which was incredibly flavorful. The property is about a 30-minute drive from PMX airport and sits beside the ocean, with lovely views and waves crashing nearby. It’s not a broad, flat sandy beach, but the water is right there for a quick dip or a quiet walk. I wanted a beach-like escape that felt secluded and stylish and was connected to the area’s natural beauty, and this fit. I spent most of my time reading in the hammocks and lounge spots by the pool and ocean, sipping coconut water or virgin piña coladas. My standard king room was clean, modern, and comfortable. I’m picky about where I sleep, and the sheets, towels, and bathroom were all spotless and well maintained. There are little buckets of water by the room doors to rinse sand off your feet before coming inside. The whole property is on sand, so bring suitable footwear. I’d absolutely return and recommend it to anyone after a peaceful, stylish retreat by the beach with such thoughtful hospitality.

The food was the weak spot. It was just okay, and there aren’t other options nearby, so they charge a lot for it. The drinks, though, were delicious, and the agua frescas were the best I had on this trip. We wanted a quiet, beautiful property, and that’s what we got. The rooms were clean, with great air conditioning, maybe too effective since the bedding was so thin that we struggled to get warm at night. WiFi was good in the outdoor common areas but didn’t work well in our room. Most of the staff were nice, though we had a couple of unpleasant interactions over our four nights.

We’d definitely stay again. It’s extremely quiet and felt very safe, and the place seems to be managed really well. The staff were kind and attentive. Rooms are spacious, comfortable, nicely designed, and well equipped, and the pool is perfect. Food was fresh and good quality. Breakfast was included, along with fresh juice and coffee drinks in the morning. I understand the restaurant has a Michelin rating. The hotel is about a 10-minute drive from Puerto Escondido. The road from the main road isn’t too bad, and a sedan can get there. Try to catch the sunrise from the comfortable beach beds. Watching it come up slowly over the warm water is magical. This is one of very few places in the area where you can see both sunrise and sunset.

My massage with Everia was probably the best I’ve ever had. I felt like a new person, and I’d absolutely recommend booking a deep tissue massage with her. The WhatsApp concierge was quick to respond and attentive, which I found both helpful and unusual. I also really liked how secluded the property is, with little noise from other villas. The setting is stunning, the views were amazing, and we were lucky with perfect weather. The shrimp tacos and guacamole were very good. The bed was cozy, and the AC kept the room comfortable in the heat. I stay in hotels, villas, and resorts at this price point or higher, and my visit was great overall. A few things could be improved for the price. The road in and out is rocky, so drive slowly and avoid a car with very low clearance. The rooftop rooms felt bland and weren’t worth it to me. There’s no umbrella, and I never used the rooftop because it was just a lounge bed without linens. Even a basic basket of towels would help. It’d be better if beach towels were available without asking a server, perhaps in a basket by the public bathroom. Beachfront orders also need someone to take them. I had to walk to the bar, as did other guests. I’ve stayed at boutique hotels like Casa Yuma where staff handle beach service. WiFi should reach the restaurant, and a water station near the bar would help too. The south-facing rooms could use more privacy. I saw workers passing by my fence, and assume they might have been able to see me if they looked. I’d stay again as long as it stays secluded, since that was a big part of what I enjoyed.

Aida, the manager, stood out from the rest of the service team. She was exceptional and sorted out most of our problems and our friends’ too. Without her, things would have run even less smoothly. I’ve lived in Mexico for seven years, and though I’ve encountered slow, careless service in many places, this was still shocking. The hotel’s physical side was lovely, the beach, pool, rooms, and amenities were all fantastic. The service was deeply disappointing. I’m sorry I can’t give it a higher rating. We’d emailed to request a four-day booking, but they sent a payment link for three days starting a day later than we’d asked. I paid without looking closely. We arrived at 11:30 pm the night before the booking and had no room. They could only offer a standard room with two beds instead of a king, at the full price. For the first hour of arguing, staff neither acknowledged the mistake nor apologized. We stayed elsewhere that night. We had a wedding package that covered meals for the weekend. On the first morning, we each ordered breakfast, then the waiter brought a bill. No one had explained what the package included, so we’d unknowingly ordered items outside it. The waiter spoke little English and struggled to explain extra dishes to some other guests. He even asked my husband to talk to them and request payment. We didn’t do that. It seemed no one had been told what was covered, and oddly, he only asked the Spanish-speaking guest to pay. The next morning we specifically checked what was included and ordered within the package. My eggs arrived half raw. Since I was pregnant, I needed them fully cooked for safety. We politely asked for them to be cooked more, but the waiter rudely refused. My husband argued with the staff for about 20 minutes before they reluctantly made the eggs again. At checkout, the bill included food we hadn’t eaten and the first morning’s extra breakfast charges, which the manager had already agreed to remove. The front desk called the manager after we explained, and eventually corrected it. We also requested a factura, the Mexican invoice needed for tax deductions. It took six days to arrive, despite about 20 reminder calls from us, endless WhatsApp messages, and several email exchanges copying a group of hotel functions.
