The hotel is located on the beach of Playa la Ropa, There are numerous restaurants, bars, nightclubs and shopping venues nearby. The airport is about 25 minutes away. This is the only hotel that has been able to get guests to keep coming back every year over the last 40 years. It is a charming small hotel surrounded by lush tropical gardens on a hill overlooking the magnificent Playa la Ropa, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. This beach hotel consists of a total of 45 accommodation units, including suites and studios. Guests are welcomed in a lobby with 24-hour reception. Facilities include air conditioning, a hotel safe, currency exchange, cloakroom, TV lounge, wireless Internet access, room and laundry services, bicycle hire and a car park. Guests can also wine and dine in the bar or restaurant. All rooms have two chairs, a hammock and a comfortable sitting corner. Each also features a terrace offering a beautiful view over the beach and bay. The rooms are also en suite with a shower and hairdryer. Guests enjoy the comfort of a double or king-size bed. Further in-room amenities include a satellite/cable TV, safe, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, an ironing set and individually regulated air conditioning. Guests can take a refreshing dip in outdoor swimming pool or relax on the sun terrace with parasols. More active guests can take part in an aerobics session or try water sports including surfing, sailing, catamaran boating, canoeing and pedal boating. Further leisure options at the resort include tennis, volleyball, beach volleyball, minigolf, golf and biking. There are also parasols on the sandy beach for guests' use. The hotel serves a continental breakfast, whilst both lunch and dinner are available from a set menu or à la carte.

We came to relax by the beach and pool, and Catalina Beach resort delivered more than we expected. The pool was spotless and refreshing, and the bar and food specials were great. Staff were incredible, especially Samuel, Hector and Joel, who were always attentive. The stairs are part of the place, but take your time, enjoy the flowers, trees, birds, geckos and fresh air along the way. There’s no rush on vacation. A lovely spot to watch the sunset, too. 100% recommended!

Playa La Ropa is the big draw here, with lovely sand, nearby restaurants and bars, and the hotel right on the beach. Service was great and you’re only steps from the water, though palapas are limited, so head down early. Beach towels are provided. Breakfast comes with the stay and was tasty. Meals can take a while, but there’s a gorgeous restaurant view to enjoy as you wait, and the staff are friendly. Our double queen room with a terrace was clean and lovely, including the bathroom with its sink and shower. The terrace was spacious, with a hammock and a great view of the sunset and waves. The room isn’t airtight, though the AC kept it reasonably cool when nighttime lows were around 25°C. Be prepared for lots and lots of stairs throughout the resort, so it won’t suit anyone who can’t manage them. We were sad to leave and would happily stay again when visiting Zihua.

We were there May 8-11. The bed mattresses were horrible, and the hotel feels like it hasn’t moved on from the 70s. If you’re over 50, think twice, there are more than 120 stair steps wherever you go around the hotel. The TV is tablet-sized, and good luck figuring it out with the two remotes they give you.

At this price, having to track someone down for beach basics was the worst part. There seemed to be just one person handling towels and camastros, and he was hard to find. I arrived around 5:00 pm once and was told he was leaving at 6:00, so I couldn’t use the beach chairs at all. The room itself was old, smelled unpleasant and felt poorly kept. The mini fridge was rusty and wouldn’t close properly, and the TV was tiny and outdated. The cost doesn’t match the room quality or service. I’ve stayed at places in the same area for a third of the price that were much better for comfort, service and overall experience. I wouldn’t recommend Catalina Resort in Ixtapa unless they make major improvements.

Alberto and Yoel made our trip special. The resort is beautiful, and the staff were top class. They made the beach and those stunning views even better.
