The location behind Aman Central is very strategic, which makes the condition of the hotel all the more disappointing. The lobby looked grand at first, but the rooms felt dated, with stained carpets, peeling wallpaper, dusty heavy curtains, and worn dark wood. Our quadruple room smelled musty, and the conditions triggered allergies for some of us. The bathtub also wouldn’t drain, though the water pressure was surprisingly good. We stopped at Royale Signature Hotel at the last minute on our way home from Thailand because of bad weather and flash flooding, hoping to get some comfortable rest. Instead, at check-in, three concierges stood by the entrance and none offered to help with our bags, even though we were struggling with several bags and children. The front desk staff weren’t warm either, and check-in felt purely transactional. After a long drive, this wasn’t the comfortable stopover we’d hoped for.

The staff member at reception ruined what could have been a decent return to this hotel. When I checked out at about 11 a.m., he was the only one on duty. After I handed over my key card, he checked the system, presumably for the deposit, then said “ok” without looking at me. When I asked to leave my luggage for a little while so I could go to Aman Sentral, he only pointed behind the counter to a storage area and didn’t help or explain. No courtesy or basic hospitality. I had to deal with the same man the previous afternoon and again that night. In the afternoon, my friend and I went to ask something, but he didn’t look at us and cut us off before we’d finished, with a rude expression and tone. That night I asked about breakfast hours and requested hair and face towels. He interrupted again with rushed, dismissive replies and rude body language. He later called my room to ask what I’d requested. I may have misheard, but I distinctly caught something like “apa tadi tah yang minta tadi”. The hotel can check the CCTV footage. The room itself was also disappointing for an executive room booked through Agoda. There was no bath bomb as advertised, and the bathroom had rust and a clogged drain. They fixed the drain promptly, but the room still didn’t feel like an executive room. I first stayed here around 2018, when it was still fairly new, and saw a large rat wandering around the café during breakfast. The hotel handled that properly at the time, apologized, and gave me a token, though I never redeemed it before it expired. I didn’t return for several years, then attended a seminar here at the end of 2024. That stay was generally satisfactory, and I thought the hotel had improved, so I recommended it to a friend who had things to do in Alor Setar and booked us a room. At check-in, two staff were on duty, one who appeared to be of Sikh descent, I assume, and the Indian male staff member with the distinctive moustache. I found that particular staff member rude and arrogant, as though guests were adversaries instead of customers. Even if maintenance is poor, staff shouldn’t have such a poor attitude. Management can review the CCTV footage to see for themselves.

The hotel’s spot behind Aman Sentral Mall is convenient, with Menara Alor Setar and plenty of affordable food options nearby. Parking was easy, with lots of spaces, and you can request a free baby cot. My one small suggestion is a bigger fridge for a room of this size. I booked a Super Deluxe Triple Room for 3D2N and arrived about three hours early. The receptionist politely explained that check-in officially starts at 3 pm, but the earliest they could check me in was 2:30 pm. The room was very clean and smelled fresh, with a spacious bathroom, bathtub, and separate shower. Hot and cold water worked without any problems. I found the room, facilities, and service better than I expected from the negative reviews and TikTok videos. There was a power cut one night, from 8 pm to 9 pm. Staff said it was the first time it had happened, and power was back in about 40 minutes. It was a pleasant stay, and I’d definitely come back. Thanks for the service, RSH team! 😎🤙🏽

The hotel’s photos on Agoda gave us a very different impression from what we found. In person, it was ugly, dirty, run down, and smelled unpleasant. We booked a Super Deluxe King Room, but on check-in on 10 January 2026, the front desk assigned us a Twin Bed Room instead. The promised room facilities weren’t there either: no hot water when we tried to shower, a bathtub that leaked badly and wouldn’t hold water, and no hair dryer. The shower walls were very dirty, and water splashed out of the badly designed enclosure even with the door shut, leaving the floor soaking wet and dangerous. On the second day, I asked for housekeeping and a shower cap. They took away the used floor mat but didn’t replace it, and the shower cap never came. Earlier, before my girlfriend showered, I called the front desk to request a floor mat. We waited more than 30 minutes with no delivery. With no mat, the bathroom floor got completely wet, and my girlfriend slipped and was injured. I called the desk again. They said the mat had already been sent, but when a staff member finally arrived, he said he’d only just received the instruction. That points to serious miscommunication and an attempt to shift responsibility. We also encountered poor service, a lack of responsibility, and internal communication problems throughout our stay. This so-called 4-star Royale Signature Hotel in Alor Setar was my worst hotel experience, and I’m angry and extremely disappointed. I strongly advise travelers to avoid it. Misleading photos, poor facilities, terrible service, and no accountability. I’ll never stay here again.

The shower area in the bathroom was covered in mould, and the wall tiles had stains. It felt unhygienic and poorly maintained, especially since proper cleaning products like Clorox or mould remover could likely get rid of most of it. I hope management gives more attention to housekeeping and hygiene.
