The pineapple was a highlight of my stay. It was in season, and Jane served it with every meal, even breakfast and dessert. I’ve loved Bario pineapples since my earlier visits, so that was a real treat. Jane kept the plates full the whole time, maybe a little too full! I’d stayed near the town centre on my first trips in 1997 and 2000, so this time I wanted a different experience and chose Jane’s place in Bario Balang Lembaa longhouse, also known as Bario Asal. It’s at the far end of town, with convenient access to the Prayer Mountain and Pa Ramapuh waterfall trails. Bario Asal was the first longhouse resettlement established during the Konfrontasi, from 1963 to 1966.

Auntie Jane was a lovely host, and the meals were a real pleasure. She cooks traditional Kelabit dishes and serves fresh local fruit, including bananas and pineapples. She’ll adjust meal plans if you’re invited to eat elsewhere, and she’s helpful with travel arrangements too. I also enjoyed talking with her about life in Bario. The longhouse sits between Prayer Mountain and Wind Chapel, landmarks associated with the Bario Revival. The town is about a 25-minute walk away. Bario Asal means “original” in Malay, and it’s the oldest longhouse in Bario, still lived in by local residents. Walking through the shared area, you may see elders keeping traditional ways of life, and the community is warm and friendly. My bedroom was clean and comfortable, and I didn’t come across any insects. Nights can be cool enough that you may not need the fan. There aren’t many electrical sockets, but Auntie Jane can help if needed. The bathroom has an instant water heater and exhaust fan, with towels, soap, and shampoo provided. Guests can also use the washing machine and dryer.

Jane looked after me so warmly during my three-day, two-night stay and always made sure I had enough to eat. I felt comfortable and safe as a woman traveling alone. The family grows what they serve, so the Bario rice and pineapple were especially fresh, and you can buy some from them too. The room had plenty of space for my belongings. The longhouse is well placed for getting around on foot, or you can ride if you check with Jane. I’d recommend it if you want a break from work or life’s usual demands and would like to experience kampung or longhouse life.

Staying in Bario’s oldest longhouse gave me a chance to experience the local culture. Aunty Jane is a patient, caring host who pays attention and goes out of her way when you need something. Definitely worth checking out for her hospitality.

I stayed in a comfortable room in an annex beside the main longhouse. The bathroom had a hot-water shower. Jane Radu was friendly and attentive, and she cooks very well.
