The shared kitchen was a nice touch, and the bed was low but comfortable. The room itself is clean, though very small and sparse: just a bed, a tiny wobbly bedside table, and a flimsy clothes rack that fell apart when we put our bathroom bags on it. There’s also a little laptop desk you can bring in from the hall. Only two outlets are under the TV, with no shelf or furniture nearby for charging things. Some sturdy shelves for luggage would help, and the stained, ugly carpet should be replaced with tiles. I did like the Google TV and keyboard remote, which made it easy to watch YouTube. It might do for a single night before a flight, but it’s noisy and the rough DIY construction is distracting. You can hear what other guests are doing, even arrivals and departures around 4 am. The mosque calls wake you at 5 am and again at 6 am, then the hundreds of parrots bred next door start chirping. Don’t expect a good night’s sleep. It could have been a charming stay, but the noise and shoddy construction got in the way.

The little garden outside is neatly done and natural looking, and gave me a welcome home feeling. The inn is simple but comfortable, with fast Wi-Fi and a special controller for watching videos online. The owner gave me a warm welcome, and I enjoyed our short chats during my three days there.

The host was excellent, and each tenant gets a smartcard, which made the security feel good. This is a standalone house that’s been repurposed. There’s an ironing board in the common area and a Coway water dispenser, plus an Android box, though the Wi-Fi is quite slow. Since it’s an old house, the walls are thin wood, so you can clearly hear neighbors. Not ideal if the people next door have noisy kids.

I stayed at JSWN INN for 20 days, and it felt like a home away from home. It’s close to USM, and buses make it easy to get to different places. The area is great too, with a 7 Eleven nearby and lots of food stalls serving tasty food at reasonable prices. The guest house is very clean and peaceful, with no disturbance. The price is very reasonable compared to other places. Jo and his family were amazing. Since it was my first time in Penang, brother Jo showed me around and took me on his motorcycle to nearby food stalls and other useful places. He’s honest and down to earth. I’d recommend staying here, you won’t regret it. Keep up the good work, bro Jo.
