I booked 12 days but left after 2 nights because my elderly mother couldn’t stay safely, and we couldn’t enjoy ourselves. They kept showing us worse options, and then refused any refund or even basic decency. The stairs are very steep and weren’t disclosed, and there’s an extra 13MYR/per night tax charged on arrival that wasn’t made clear when booking. The location is the only good thing. The place felt old, outdated, dirty, and noisy, just neglected rather than charming or historic. Most rooms have no real daylight, only dark, blurred windows, and the photos are misleading. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

Location was the main reason we moved hotels and stayed at Hoose Penang for 2 nights. It’s close to the old town and the sea, and very budget friendly. Just keep in mind, it feels like staying in an old heritage house, not a hotel. The wooden building dates to 1903, and you can hear other guests walking around. We had a middle room, so street noise was minimal. The stairs are narrow and steep because of the building’s age and structure. Our calm toddler managed, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a child who tends to run around. The owner was responsive and genuinely tried to make the stay as good as possible, so ask if you need anything. The male receptionist is an older gentleman who doesn’t speak Malay or English well, possibly only an Indian language, which made communication a little difficult. He was very friendly with our child and took time to show us around, though. The room was cold from the air conditioner during the day, which was nice at first, but it got warm at night and we were sweating even with the AC on. Temperature stability could be better. The bathtub’s water flow was weak and inconvenient even for a regular shower. We didn’t use it to soak. The daybed couch cover was the one issue we raised, and they replaced the linen right away. I wouldn’t call the room dirty, but housekeeping wasn’t up to proper standards. The table hadn’t been wiped properly and still had a used tissue from previous guests. We didn’t complain, understanding the age of the property and its price, but cleanliness matters in hospitality. It gets extremely dusty in an old wooden house, so proper housekeeping training and using both dry and wet vacuum cleaners would improve comfort a lot. The picture was taken after our stay. YES, we always left our room neat! Our room was spacious, with a very big shower area and comfortable beds. We had the duplex suite for 3 people, with 3 beds. It could be inconvenient to climb down the stairs to use the bathroom at night, and the lighting wasn’t sufficient. Staff were friendly, and the manager helped with our requests, though some toiletries took a few hours to arrive. There’s no breakfast, just tea, coffee and bread, but good restaurants are nearby. The price is fair for the location. I was torn between 4 or 5 stars, but gave 4. They can do better, cleanliness is a must. Hoose Penang may suit you if you want a very budget-friendly place in a heritage building, value the location, and have realistic expectations. If you expect hotel-level cleanliness, stable temperatures, quiet, or modern facilities, it’s probably not the right fit.

Everything in central Georgetown was within walking distance, which made the location ideal. The staff were attentive and helped with all my needs. I had a wonderful stay and can definitely recommend it.

The room had two floors, and the shared bathroom was really nice. It’s an interesting building in a good spot, near long foon cafe and central George town. The guy at the desk was helpful and sent some great George town recommendations on WhatsApp. There were quite a lot of mosquitos in the room, though.

The location puts you right in Georgetown’s heritage precinct, near Unesco Heritage street art and within walking distance of lots of great restaurants and attractions like the Top. For the price, it’s good value. The rooms are large, the beds comfortable, and the shower area especially spacious. We stayed in a duplex suite for 3 people with 3 beds. It had plenty of room, though going downstairs to the bathroom at night could be a little inconvenient. The lights could also be brighter. The staff were friendly, and the manager helped with our requests. One small snag was that some toiletries we asked for took a few hours to arrange. There’s no breakfast beyond tea, coffee and bread, but with good restaurants nearby, that wasn’t necessary. The building is an antique-style place about 100 years old, converted into a hotel.
