Magpie Residence

After cycling all the way from Chiang Mai to Penang, I got some proper rest here. The dorm is spacious, with big lockers, and both it and the showers were always clean. There’s a nice shared area where you can sit and meet people, and they’ve started serving a great breakfast, as you can see in the picture. Stay more than three days and they can wash your clothes for free. The owner and staff were very helpful too. It’s on a quiet street away from the busy, noisy part of town, but still only about a 10-minute walk away. I recommend it if you want somewhere comfortable to stay for a few days or longer.

The breakfast was my favorite thing here, cooked for me every day and different each morning. They’ll also do your laundry if you stay more than three days. I’d planned on three nights, then ended up staying six. The dorm was clean, and every comfy bed had a privacy curtain, its own fan, socket, and light. The staff were lovely as well. I really liked being at the edge of the heritage zone. The center is just a 10-minute walk away, and there are great local eateries nearby. I really enjoyed my time here, thanks so much!

Restaurants are just around the corner, maybe a 7-minute walk, and it was totally worth staying here. The hostel is new, clean, and decorated in an original way, with very comfortable beds. My room was quiet, and each bed had a curtain for privacy. The room and common area were clean, and I was pleased with the staff and the service he provided. There’s a shared kitchen area to hang out in, and the locker space was big enough for a large suitcase.

Stone, who’s in charge of Magpie, really made the stay for me. He’s friendly, knowledgeable, and hilarious, and gave us lots of tips for Georgetown, Penang, and other Malaysian cities. The location felt very safe and was good too. Everything was very clean, including the common areas, bathrooms, showers, and beds. The showers had great pressure. Beds are private with curtains, and have lights and outlets. The lockers are really big, towel rental is free, and breakfast changes each day. I’d definitely stay here again!
