There are lots of interesting spots if you head southeast on foot for 20 to 30 minutes, including heritage galleries, hawker food, 3D art and Chinatown. The homestay itself is clean and pleasant, right on Penang Island and just a few steps from Jalan Burma.

We arrived quite late, so finding another hotel after the room change would have been difficult. I had booked the kitty themed room, but they put us in a dark Totoro room with no window, and my two daughters were scared and very upset. The host apologized and took RM 30 off our stay. First, we were told the previous guest had asked to stay an extra night, then we were told the themes had been mixed up. We're still not sure which explanation was true. I hope guests are told ahead of time if they're being moved to a different themed room.

The owners were friendly and helpful, and there’s a Thai restaurant downstairs. We didn’t actually have breakfast, but this old school bed and breakfast is decorated in a really creative way.
