The room was spacious and good, and the saltwater pool was nice, though cold in the afternoon. I chose The George based on reviews and a local’s recommendation, but a lot of the service left me disappointed. The free snacks and drinks in the fridge were only restocked on the first day. If you ask for more, there’s a charge, even though the room rate was the same on both days. They gave us an empty glass bottle to refill at a water station outside the room, near the pool on the second floor. Fresh towels, face towels, or anything else have to be requested. We were keen to try dim sum at Saffron because of its social media reviews, but breakfast is only served from 7 to 10:30 a.m. The dim sum tray had siu mai and some bao, plus one noodle station and a limited selection of other food. It was about RM47+ per person for hotel guests. There are better options within walking distance, including places where you can finish with a good coffee. I also ordered room service from the bar and was told delivery to the room would cost an extra RM10 in service fees. It was only a few steps from the lobby to the second floor by lift, so I decided to collect the order myself and asked them to make it takeaway. The staff asked whether I had a RM60 dining voucher, but I’d never seen one, so maybe that was just a random question. The food was handed to me on a plate without a cover, tray, or cutlery. They didn’t have a takeaway box or any other packaging. It felt like hostel service at a five-star hotel rate, maybe two-star service or less. The price and rating aren’t worth it, and I won’t return.

Our sleep was also affected by the mosque nearby. We were woken shortly after six in the morning, which would be hard for light sleepers or anyone sensitive to noise. We booked a balcony room hoping to enjoy the view and a quiet moment in the morning or evening, but our assigned balcony was completely obstructed. I understand there are only three or four rooms like that in the whole hotel, and we happened to get one. I can’t help wondering whether we were assigned it because we’re Chinese. If that was the reason, it’s really disheartening. The balcony pictures online look very different from what we saw, and rooms with fully obstructed views should be clearly identified. I wouldn’t have booked if I’d known. There were problems with the room as well. The TV had no signal; after someone came to repair it, the sound was piercing and it kept switching off and restarting, so it still wasn’t watchable. The towels were worn out. The hotel’s service overall felt weak. A front desk employee of Chinese descent was cold and rigid with us, though two staff members stood out positively: a friendly, patient Muslim woman wearing a headscarf, and a fairly enthusiastic male employee with a round face.

The only part that lets The George Hotel Penang down for me is breakfast. For a five-star hotel with many international guests, the selection felt limited and not varied enough. I’d expected more choice to match the rest of the hotel. I’ve stayed here several times and have had a consistently wonderful experience. The staff are professional, friendly, and helpful, and the rooms are clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. The bathroom is especially well equipped, even including a weighing scale. The room quality and facilities feel worthy of a five-star stay. I really enjoy coming here and will return. A wider breakfast selection would make it perfect. Thankyou🩷🍃

There was loud construction right outside our room, and the soundproofing wasn’t good. We asked to move rooms, but they wouldn’t let us, even though there were vacant rooms at the hotel. The air-conditioning took more than an hour to cool the room somewhat, and check-in took over 15 minutes despite only one party being ahead of us. I expected four- or five-star service, but the customer service fell short. Very disappointing.

I had a pleasant stay at The George Hotel, and the staff deserve recognition. The air-conditioning in my room wasn’t working properly, and the maintenance staff member, Syazwan, did his best to fix it. The next morning Candice and Elan at the front desk were attentive and helpful. Elan made sure the room had been thoroughly checked and was satisfactory. I was impressed by the dedication and professionalism of Elan, Candice, and Syazwan. I’d be happy to stay again. Kong & Leelee
