I chose this hotel for its spot in Ipoh Old Town's heritage area. Concubine Lane runs parallel to Market St, and the long-standing tea merchant Leong Swee Sang is only a few doors away. The hotel's interior is very Instagramable, and the room was basic and small but clean. There's no wardrobe, though a hot and cold water dispenser sits in the shared area. The ensuite bathroom is a decent size and has a hot shower. A few things to bear in mind: there are no ground floor rooms and no lift, so it won't suit elderly guests. On weekends, live music from a nearby pub can be heard until the early hours. Traffic is heavy around here, so drivers may need to park farther away, and Grab passengers may be dropped outside the area.

The old town location is convenient, and the hotel has been decorated with good taste. What made the stay difficult was the noise: the rooms aren't soundproof, so the live band was very loud until 2 am, and during the day there was a repeated bird song from the neighbourhood. The mattress was also too hard for me. I hope the owner takes this feedback seriously and makes improvements.

The cafe opens onto a back lane, and both the coffee and tiramisu were good. The hotel itself has a lovely rustic look that feels different from other places. The woodwork is incredible and the attention to detail is great. I would have rated the room five stars, except the bed was a bit hard. The hotel and cafe are both charming.

The carved wood used throughout the hotel gives the place a very distinctive look. It's clean, simple, and has what you need, with great value for money. This style won't be for everyone, but I found the presentation really unique and don't think you'll be disappointed.

There's plenty of food close by, and the location is good. You can hear live pub music from the room. If you're a light sleeper, you may also notice water flowing through the pipes or the occasional noise from people walking on the floor above.
