Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu

We had a wonderful honeymoon at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, and would love to return. The team welcomed us with genuine warmth, and some thoughtful touches made the stay memorable. Our spacious, well-kept room had a stunning sea view, and the calm, luxurious atmosphere was ideal for a couple’s getaway. We loved the beachfront and swimming pool, especially the breathtaking sunsets each evening. Breakfast had plenty of choices, and the staff were attentive, friendly and professional. A peaceful, romantic retreat, highly recommended for honeymooners.

I stayed at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru last week after booking through Booking.com. The stay itself was fine, but the follow-up service was extremely frustrating. I needed an official invoice for a claim, yet after several calls and messages the hotel couldn’t provide either an invoice or any proof that I’d stayed. They kept saying this was because I’d booked through a third-party platform, and that they could issue a tax invoice only for bookings made on the hotel’s own website. I’ve stayed at many hotels and never had this problem, since invoices are routinely issued regardless of booking platform. I’d also expect an invoice at checkout as part of standard procedure. For a hotel of this standing, the poor coordination, lack of flexibility and justification felt unreasonable. It’s disappointing to see a well-known brand handle such a basic paperwork request so badly.

The sunsets are unforgettable, and the evening atmosphere is special. Live music starts around sunset, making it relaxing to watch the sun disappear over the horizon. Sunset Bar is a highlight and worth a visit even if you’re not staying at the resort. There are several pools, so it doesn’t feel overcrowded and you can find a quiet spot. It seems suited to families and couples alike. During our visit, the main lobby was under maintenance, which made the entrance less welcoming and not quite in keeping with the resort’s usual luxury feel. The pool also needs fixing. They told me they’re renovating everything and that the main lobby would be ready in July. Despite the temporary inconvenience, the location and facilities are lovely, and I’d gladly return for those sunsets.

The South China Sea sunsets created a beautiful, peaceful atmosphere and were one of the highlights of our family getaway. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu is very family-oriented, with well-designed family rooms and complimentary toiletries for children. The spacious pool worked well for kids and adults alike. Breakfast was excellent, with a broad selection of ASEAN and Western food. A comfortable, quality resort for a relaxing family stay.
