Hotel O Kuantan Backpackers

The road noise made it hard to sleep. I heard loud motorbikes and cars with bad mufflers passing all night, almost like a Saturday night racetrack. I hope it's not like that every night. This is one of Malaysia's older backpacker dorms, and it shows. Nobody else was staying when I visited. The beds and sheets are old, there are no curtains, and the room has just two charging outlets. There are two bathrooms. It does have AC and a fan, and they provide drinking water, but the place needs a full paint job. It's near the local bus station but far from the bus terminal. Couples should probably look elsewhere; a solo backpacker might be fine for a night or two. The extra 10 RM foreigner tax also makes it worse value.

The place badly needs maintenance and renovation. Reception was supposed to be open until 11 pm, but the staff had already left by 10:30. I ended up waiting half an hour to check in, and the staff weren't very helpful.

Free tea and coffee are a nice touch. The rooms are simple but comfortable, though the pillows need replacing and a few small details could use attention.

It's a shame that a hotel in such a good location has old furniture and fittings in the rooms. The rooms and beds are reasonably clean, but they could use an upgrade, perhaps card access and more wall sockets. The toilets especially need renovation and bring down the impression of the whole hotel.
