You don’t feel homesick at Kenyalang Urban Homestay because it really feels like home. It’s spacious, clean and homey, so our group felt comfortable right away. Rose and Wilson were warm and welcoming, and always ready to help with anything we needed. Their kindness made us feel like family, not just guests. Highly recommend it if you’re visiting Kuching.

The walls are pretty thin, so a rowdy family nearby could make it hard to sleep. I don’t usually mind, but I’m sure others would. Still, this is my top choice when I’m holidaying in Kuching. They’ve added a room extension and balcony over the years, and the small room with two beds is a nice option if you’re after a cheap deal, maybe around RM150-170 a night.

There’s a sewage smell coming from somewhere behind the house, probably because of the old buildings’ unsuitable sewage system. I think the smell might go away in the rainy season, and keeping the rear-facing window shut stops it getting inside. The house itself is an old Malay house that’s been renovated into one with many rooms. It was clean, cozy and comfortable, and I loved my first experience staying in a Malay house.
