Gibbon Guesthouse

It's not the cheapest budget stay, but for me it was well worth the money because it gets the important things right. The beds are very clean, with solid, well-designed pod cubicles instead of the usual wobbly, creaky bunks. Each has a curtain, shelf, light, power sockets, and a good mattress, though I found the pillow a bit firm. Rooms have lockers, good air conditioning, and electronic key cards. The shared bathroom and toilet were very clean, with strong water pressure and a good water heater. Towels and shampoo were provided. The common area is cozy and comfortable for the whole group to lounge in, and it's air conditioned, with complimentary drinking water, biscuits, bread, and hot drinks. There's a fridge too, though our group only used it for beer. It's within walking distance of shops, malls, 7-11, kopitiam, and an ATM. It's on the first floor, so keep in mind there are stairs. John, who runs the place and also owns the restaurant behind it, John's Place, is very friendly and helpful. My group had more than 50 glasses of his very good ice blended kedongdong over our 3 day stay. Free Internet too.

The rooftop bar is a great place to end the day, and the guesthouse itself is the best in kuching. It's nice and clean, with breakfast included and free toast with peanut butter or jam, plus tea or coffe available all day. There are private lockers with enough room for a backpack. The owner, jonh, is great and will help with anything you ask. The hot shower has nice pressure, the toilets were tidy, and the mattress was really good. You get a cortine for privacy too. Just go try it, you'll go back.

For an affordable bed in the city, this small guesthouse is pretty good and in a strategic location. The owner and employees are friendly, and most importantly, the toilet and shower are clean!
