Miri Hotel

At over RM240 a night, I expected the basic amenities to be there, but there was no hot water, kettle, or complimentary mineral water, and nobody warned us before check-in. When I called the front desk on arrival night about having no hot water for a shower, I was told, “There is no hot water today.” They didn’t apologize, suggest a fix, or offer an alternative. I brought it up again the next morning. First they said hot water was available if we left it running longer. We had already tried that the night before and again that morning, with no hot water at all. Then the explanation changed to say repairs were underway that morning. The mixed messages and lack of transparency felt very unprofessional. If they knew about maintenance, they should have told guests before arrival. The front desk attitude also came across as unfriendly and dismissive. I was very disappointed and hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves the facilities and service for future guests.

The room had air conditioning and a warm shower, and the WiFi was fine, though it dropped out now and then. Staff were friendly and spoke fluent English. For the quality and location, the price was good. Everything was clean, but the rooms, especially the bathrooms, could use a bit of freshening up. There was also some confusion over the tourism tax. We’re convinced we paid it twice because we booked through Booking, but it wasn’t a big issue.

The rate was fair for the stay, but I wouldn’t come back. The hotel is old, and our room smelled of smoke even though we’d asked for a non-smoking room. The pillows weren’t clean either, though they did replace them for us.

There were 23 of us staying here during our trip to Miri. The location was pretty good, especially with a cafe downstairs. Our one complaint is that the hotel seems haunted. People in our group experienced various strange things.
