Mulu Diana Homestay

There were four of us, and dinner turned into a sort of omakase. Diana told us the fish dish we'd asked for was being cooked, then checked if chicken and three vegetables sounded good too. It did. Everything arrived looking appetizing, along with a huge serving of plain rice. She explained it was beruas kampung rice, not the pure white supermarket kind. Transport was 5 RM per person, and Diana waved us off after a very satisfying meal.

There are no hot showers, air conditioning, or Wi-Fi here, and the 4G signal was stronger outside on the balcony when connected to Digi. That said, the service options are extensive: breakfast is included, lunch and dinner cost 25 RM each, transport is 5 RM per person per direction, laundry is 10 RM per kg, and the host can help arrange National Park activities. It's a budget-friendly place, though demand is high, so book ahead if you're planning to stay at MDH. I found a room at short notice and the accommodation surpassed what I expected. For the price in Mulu National Park, this was hard to beat, especially since the other options cost a lot more. Dinner was available for 25 RM when I stayed and tasted great; breakfast came with the room, and the pancakes were the best I've tried in Borneo. Diana was kind and helpful, and I felt at ease. The clean dorm had freshly made beds. It's around a 20-minute walk from the park, though rides there and back are easy to arrange. The bathroom was basic and had no hot water, which didn't bother me in 35°C weather. No AC either, and nearly every other bed had a fan. I've attached the park activity price lists in the photos. Diana somehow managed airport pickups, rides to the National park, and cooking for everyone, all with a relaxed “no problem” attitude. The park is about a 20-minute walk away if you don't need a ride. Her traditional local meals were easily the best food we had in Borneo, and she's a wonderful host. The rooms are plain, with no AC or hot water, but the ceiling fans were enough and a cold shower felt welcome in the heat. It was clean and good value, which mattered most to us. One of the best stays of our trip.
