The climb up to Celyn Resort Kinabalu is steep and bumpy, so a 4WD or a car in good shape is a good idea, especially if you’re not confident driving. The views make the effort feel worthwhile once you arrive. The chalets sit on a hill with lovely scenery all around, and the resort is set back from the main road. It’s very quiet, with birds and wind, a nice break from city stress. At around 2,000 meters above sea level in Kundasang, it gets seriously cold. Nights can reach 14°C, so bring a thick hoodie or you’ll be shivering. The rooms have a cozy rustic wooden look, are clean, and the bed is comfortable, though it’s not a modern five-star hotel. If you can, get a balcony room facing the mountain. Hot Milo while the clouds move over the granite peaks is a treat. The cafe has decent local and Western food. The steamboat is especially nice in the cold, though prices are a little high up here. The whole place has a European countryside feel and was a lovely spot for our highlands escape. I’d give it 8.5/10, and it seems suited to couples on honeymoon or families wanting that “Sabah Alps” atmosphere.

The resort is quiet and tucked away, a good spot to enjoy nature and the sounds of birds and insects. That secluded setting won’t be for everyone. Getting there takes you about 3 km off the Kundasang - Ranau main road, and a 4WD or high-clearance SUV is recommended. The rooms are very basic and could use better maintenance, but the spectacular Mt Kinabalu view right outside the room makes up for some of the inconveniences. There’s a restaurant serving decent Asian or Western breakfast, and you can order à la carte too.

The staff are nice, and both the food and scenery are good. It’s okay for a two- or three-day stay, but the hotel itself feels pretty average. Some lights flicker, the towels have stains, and the toilet could be cleaner. The main frustration is the WiFi and internet. There should be WiFi in the rooms, since it’s inconvenient to go all the way to the lobby just to check messages. For me, it’s a middling 3/5.

I couldn’t stay because the roads weren’t suitable for my rental sedan, but the staff were very friendly and even cancelled the booking for us. The views are among the best, and the accommodation looks great. There’s also a play area for little ones.

The staff are friendly, and it’s very quiet, but the place is rather run down. It needs urgent maintenance and upgrades. It’s isolated, about 2.6 km from the main road.
