The villas had everything we needed, and the food was great. The excursions were organised so we had time to eat and some time to ourselves. We saw lots of animals on every river trip, which was amazing. Our honeymoon stay was brilliant, and all the staff were welcoming. Special thanks to Suhailie, our guide. He knows so much and his passion for nature really comes through. The one downside was other tour operators arriving with two-stroke engines while we were looking for wildlife. The noise and smell were awful, and I’m sure they must affect the jungle and water wildlife. Our guides didn’t use those engines, and I’m amazed others still can. We had a great time and hope to come back for an anniversary in the years ahead.

If you want to see wildlife without having to move around yourself, this is the place. All the excursions are by boat, and you can sit back while the guides point out proboscis monkeys, macaques, saltwater crocodiles, hornbills, and raptors. We were lucky enough to see pygmy elephants several times. We didn’t see orangutans here, but saw them at the sister resort. If you want to explore on your own, that isn’t possible here. And for anything beyond the “big Borneo Five,” I’d consider a private tour, since the guides focus on the big animals. We arrived at Sukau Rainforest Lodge after a 2.5 hr boat ride from Sandakan. The resort sits on the river, with the main restaurant and bar right at the edge. The cabins are a short walk along a long boardwalk. Rooms are simple, with very large beds, a mini fridge, and nice hot showers. There’s outdoor seating, but mosquitoes kept us from using it. The roof makes it hard to see outside, so the room feels dark, a bit like a cave. The short boardwalk has a roof too, which makes it hard to see into the trees. Food is served buffet style and was usually quite nice. Wine, beer, and mixed drinks were readily available. We had a very good overall experience.

Wild orangutans and plenty of langur monkeys and hornbills made our stay special. The jungle is right nearby, and you can explore it on purpose-built walkways. It’s a quiet, peaceful oasis tucked into the rainforest. The staff were amazing and made our honeymoon and birthday celebrations memorable. I’d highly recommend it.

We did a 3D2N river safari and saw everything we could have hoped for, including the Borneo Big 5 before lunch one day. The guides were top notch, the staff kind and gracious, and the food was great. Such an amazing experience. You’ll wish you could stay longer.

Our two-night stay was made by Farhan, an incredible guide and easily the best I’ve had in years of travelling. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and funny. The lodge is wonderful, in an amazing part of the world. I’d recommend it.
