Hotel O Bei King

The oyster omelette and red wine chicken mee sua were delicious, and everyone enjoyed them. We came for weekday lunch around 12:30 pm. At first we were the only ones there, then roughly three or four tables filled during the meal. We’d return for those dishes if we get the chance. We’d asked for a small grouper, around 500 g, cooked Teochew-style, but they served a 1.2 kg fish in soy sauce instead of the clear broth we requested. Maybe it was to cover the fishy taste, but it came out a little salty. That felt misleading and was disappointing.

The food was alright, but we couldn’t enjoy lunch because flies kept buzzing around us and we had to keep shooing them away. We’d expected the place to be clean since it’s a hotel restaurant, so the number of flies was really irritating and disappointing. I won’t come back. Anyone going should bring fly spray or a racket. It felt very unhygienic for a hotel restaurant.

I wouldn’t recommend staying in the hotel rooms. The place is too old and needs maintenance, and the room wasn’t clean to expectations. There was a cockroach, old water left in the kettle from the previous guest, mold on the wall paint, a broken shower head, and other issues. The TV only had one channel.

The ambience is very good, and the Chinese food is delicious. If you’re looking for authentic Hock Chew food, it’s worth trying. There’s a hotel too, so you can have dinner and stay a night or two.
