Breakfast was the bright spot at Hotel Pension Steiner, with plenty of fresh, tasty choices. The staff were polite and the location was convenient, but the room had some basic problems. Its air conditioning didn't work, which was uncomfortable in the heat, and although the sheets were clean, they didn't feel soft or fresh. In the bathroom, the tub had only a hand shower, so it was hard to wash without splashing water everywhere. I don't usually post negative reviews, but those issues took away from the stay. The hotel has potential, though I’d only suggest it for now if you can put up with those shortcomings.

The location was the only part that met our expectations. The host was friendly, but at check-in he had just six keys for the seven rooms we had booked and paid for. When we asked about the missing key, he said there were enough beds. We had to argue, because booking specific rooms matters. It wasn't reasonable to expect two guests who barely knew us to share with our family of three, even if the family room had five beds. Cleanliness was awful too. Cockroaches appeared while we were having dinner, making it impossible to eat in the dining area. At least one room was run-down, and its bathroom door wouldn't close properly.

The courtyard was a lovely place to see and photograph all kinds of birds, including busy weaver birds at their nest. We stayed at the start and finish of our three-week safari through Namibia and Botswana in 2006. It worked well as a base for setting off, and was comfortable for the rest of the stay too. The food was good, the beds comfortable, and it was handy for backie rentals and the airport.

The rooms are very old, and the whole place feels neglected. Even reception wasn't clean or organized, and the outside area was dirty and poorly maintained. The pool didn't look inviting at all. Our tub wouldn't shut off, so water ran all night until we turned off the main supply to avoid wasting it. We also found silver fish and moths in the room. The staff were friendly, but the neighborhood was quite noisy. It used to be run by a German couple and is now owned by a Chinese company. I wouldn't recommend staying here.
