Laps New World Hotel

The superior room I was moved into had plumbing problems too: water was on the bathroom floor, and the shower kept dripping. The AC also leaked into the room. Before that, I'd turned down a standard room because it was too dim, had plumbing issues, and had a stain on the toilet seat that looked like urine. I found the same kinds of problems in the pictures of the room I was offered.

The bedsheets were always dirty, and the AC barely worked, so the room stayed too hot. During a shower, the water could suddenly stop, and I'd have to call reception to turn it back on. The service was very bad, and the rooms need a lot of maintenance. They really need to sort these things out, since they're the basics.

I spent a couple of days at Laps New World Hotel, Abuja, on a little break, and I wouldn't rule out visiting again. The location is handy for getting around, with Jabi Lake Mall/Park and Amazon kayak only a few meters away, and the airport about 45 minutes off. Being right by the road does mean it isn't the quietest spot. My room was roomy, nicely furnished, and fine, though not high tech. The bathroom was just okay, and its tap head was faulty. Even an executive room doesn't give you much extra compared with other hotels, since the main difference from a standard room is size. There weren't enough sockets either, just three in my room, for the TV, refrigerator, and ups. The place seemed fairly maintained, though it didn't feel new. The tiles had lots of grout and looked badly cleaned, which could put some people off, and the hallways were poorly lit. Power was another problem: sometimes it was off for hours, even at night. Some staff were unpleasant, especially in the restaurant. They embarrassed me over payment even though my room was charged, then didn't apologize once it was sorted out. Food wasn't great and service was slow. The fried rice looked flavorful but wasn't, and the yam and egg sauce I ordered for breakfast was basically tomato sauce with a few bits of egg 😅. There's a laundry and a salon, though the salon attendant isn't always around. I didn't check out the bar or pool because the service had already put me off. It's just okay, so keep expectations modest.

The pool was dirty, and the room stayed dark even after they changed the burned out bulbs. The toilet was fitted partly underneath the sink, the shower didn't work right, and the door card was broken, so a staff member had to let me in with a master card every time. The TV had only 4-5 decent channels, two of them showing soccer, and the fridge froze everything. There were some good points too: the room was very spacious, with a large TV, plenty of AC, and hot water. The staff were friendly, especially Tutu at the front desk, and Sunny was helpful as well.
