Gold Crown Hotel

I checked in at Gold Crown Hotel in owerri Imo state with a colleague while travelling through Nigeria for my usual Jumia branding services across 24 cities. We took a suite, but the stay was a letdown. After I’d settled in, the TV stopped working. The toilet wouldn’t flush and the water wouldn’t run properly. By the next morning I checked out without brushing my teeth or bathing because there was no water. The staff weren’t nice, and all they did was say sorry. I can give them a second chance. Thanks.

There’s plenty to like nearby: it’s a short distance from Control, the staff are friendly, breakfast is decent and complimentary, the restaurant food is good, and the bar is nice. But some rooms smell strongly of sewer, and cockroaches can be an issue when used dishes and cutlery sit in the corridors for a long time. Power cuts happen often, and sometimes it takes a while for the hotel generator to come on.

It was nice, though it could use a bit of a modern update.

The facilities were a mess: the pool was dirty, the sheets had blood on them, the bathrooms were dirty, and the toilets didn’t work properly. Wi-Fi was terrible, the TV channels kept cutting out, and there was no fridge in the “business suite.” The view from that room was a joke, and calling it a business suite feels insulting to actual business suites. The photos being promoted seem to be from when the place was first built, because what I saw was completely different. Maybe there’s a room nobody uses that they keep for the photos. Service was poor too. We waited 1-2 hours every day for clean towels, then got only one even though there were two people in the room. Bring your own towel if you want to save yourself the headache. Breakfast was one egg and three pieces of bread with tea or coffee. Rooms are meant for one person, and you have to pay extra for a second guest. I really can’t find one good thing to say. They need to shut down, renovate, and retrain the staff.
