I booked two days off work to relax and paid for a spa service I couldn’t use. The sign said the pool was used for swimming lessons Monday through Wednesday, though that isn’t mentioned on the website, but lessons were happening again today, Thursday. When I called, they said it was an exception and “just for 2 hours.” Guests are supposedly able to share the pool, but the kids take it over, with parents watching behind the glass and lots of shouting, so relaxing is impossible. At the front desk, all I got was “it’s just 2 hours,” with no apology, accountability, discount, or anything. The streaming sauna door doesn’t work properly, and it stops heating after a few minutes. At breakfast, my request to warm the vegetal milk was ignored. It costs 20 euro extra. The food has good variety and quality, but the only gluten free option is bread, and there was nothing gluten free when I wanted something sweet with tea in the afternoon. I woke up with back pain because the bed dips when you lie on it.

I went to the reception after asking at the restaurant for a plate and cutlery to take to my room. Then I found out they charged €1,50 for them. I’d never heard of that and thought it was a ripoff. At this rate, I’m surprised they don’t charge to use the loo. Van der Valk is starting to feel like a ripoff chain.

The food was great, but it was so crowded that it was hard to enjoy. It’s cheap and feels more or less like a factory.

The lunch was great, with tasty food and drinks at decent prices. The hotel is stylish, clean, and very well designed. Service was impeccable, and the staff seemed very well trained.

Even with renovations underway, the rooms are extremely spacious and new. There’s a restaurant and a separate bar, which works well for business entertaining. The restaurant food and breakfast were both nice. Alkmaar is only 10 minutes away, and this is well worth a stop.
