I was left disappointed enough by the lack of replies to my emails that I’m writing this review. We reported the issue at reception and were told the hotel manager would contact us. We’ll also be reporting it to Booking.com. The hotel’s condition didn’t match the overly generous reviews. It was dirty throughout, and our room looked like it hadn’t been cleaned after the previous guests. There were long hairs on the bed, spiders on the walls, and the furniture was badly damaged. We checked in at 3 p.m., but renovation work in the room next door continued until 5:30 p.m., so we couldn’t rest.

I wouldn’t recommend Hotel Huis Van Bewaring. We were told at check-in that parking would be free, then got charged on the last day without any warning. That felt dishonest and left a very bad final impression. The service was poor throughout, and one staff member spoke to us in a way that made us very uncomfortable. It came across as rude and discriminatory, and felt completely unacceptable. Honestly, the stay was awful and stressful.

Having breakfast in the dining room was a relaxing part of the stay, with a calm atmosphere and really good food. The building was once the Almelo prison, and staying in the old cell block sounds macabre, but it’s a fantastic novelty. They did a great job refurbishing it. If I visit Almelo again, I’ll definitely stay here.

The location is very convenient, close to shops, restaurants, and bars, and about a 10-minute walk from the train station, which is handy for visiting nearby towns too. I had a great stay and found the bed comfortable. The hotel has a cool, chic feel, with its former jail details kept in the design. The bathtub as the centerpiece of the room is a fun, bold touch.

The room was dusty and dirty, with signs of earlier maintenance, and the shower blinds were broken so I couldn’t close them. I also had to get up at 08:00 because a maintenance worker wanted to go through my room to reach the balcony. Then I realized I didn’t have a balcony key, so basically anyone could come and go if they wanted. Why should I have to let people into my room? Other guests have balconies on the same level and could just step over the fence into my room. Bullshit.
