Belfort Hotel

For three nights I stayed in a single room. It was small, but had everything I needed and was spotless, which was a pleasant surprise after reading reviews that made me worry it would be a dump. It isn't a fancy hotel, but for the price there's what you need nearby, and the tram is right across the street. I'd recommend it to budget travellers.

I arrived late after another hotel, The Conscious Hotel The Tire Station, turned me away despite my confirmed booking. The receptionist at Hotel Belfort was professional and a real lifesaver. He was sympathetic, called the other hotel to challenge their appalling service, and quickly found me a room. It only needed a quick linen change after a very early check-out, and he handled everything with care and competence, checking with his manager for confirmation. The next morning, the team, including the Manager, handled the invoice and made sure everything was in order smoothly and professionally. I can't recommend Hotel Belfort highly enough. If you're looking for integrity and great customer service, book here. They made a terrible night manageable.

Just bad, don't go. The staff knew there was no hot water for showers but couldn't do anything about it. The toilet wouldn't flush, there were grease rings in the sink, and the next room smelled of smoke. Had it even been aired out? We booked through a platform that advertised parking, then messaged to confirm it only after we'd paid a non-refundable fee. The nearest secure parking was a 2 km walk away, and we arrived at 3 am. There were other issues you might overlook, but a local youth hostel would be a better bet.

The location near the city centre was the one good part of our stay, but we left disappointed and expected more respect and at least some of the services included in the price. We stayed four nights, and room service was missing on two of them. On the second night, our room was filthy even though we had left the green sign asking for it to be cleaned. The sign had been turned to red, and there were no fresh towels or changed sheets. When I booked, daily room service was clearly listed as included. The first night, a light in our room short-circuited and kept throwing sparks. The upper hallway and rooms were left without light. When we went for help, they didn’t offer another room. I didn’t want to sleep beside a lamp hanging above the bed that might spark again or start a fire overnight. Instead, the man accused my partner of pulling on the lights and causing the short circuit. My partner doesn’t speak English or Dutch. He touched the particular lamp only to show where the sparks came from, he hadn’t pulled on it. One of the bathroom lights was out too, making it quite dark when trying to shower.
