The room views were the highlight for us. Waking up in the suite with the sun on our faces made us want to stay longer. The event itself was exactly what we’d hoped for, thoughtfully arranged and a great fit for our company’s distinctive style. On the night of my birthday party, everything came together just as I’d hoped. The venue looked great, the music setup was the best, the bar staff worked hard, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Sleeping in the hotel feels surreal. Its high-up position gives you a lovely view across all of Amsterdam, and the alternative-looking furniture somehow fits together in a great harmony.

Bring earplugs and a sleep mask if you’re a light sleeper. The curtains may not fully keep out the city lights and neon glow, and you can hear the art district below. Also, the price of around 1,000 euros a night is steep, so a longer stay may not be the best value. For one night, though, the initial experience and views are undeniably worth it. Crane Hotel Faralda is a former crane turned into an extravagant, beautifully designed suite, complete with a rooftop jacuzzi. You get a chance to sleep 50 meters above ground with panoramic views over Amsterdam, in a landmark spot tucked into the city’s vibrant street-art district. The industrial-chic atmosphere and unusual setting make for a once-in-a-lifetime kind of stay. Service was exceptional, and the staff were dedicated to making the visit special. Make sure you know about the unusual entrance and industrial crane elevator before you arrive, since they add some confusion as well as excitement and a sense of exclusivity. The area below is a contrast: homeless people live in trailers and wash clothes by the water, and teens make out in cars at the end of the drive. Even so, Crane Hotel Faralda feels like a hidden gem and part of the city’s eclectic charm. If you want an unforgettable escape, it’s a must-visit, even just for a night.
