Hotel Hermitage Amsterdam

My flight to Amsterdam was canceled because of extreme weather, so it was physically impossible for me to reach the hotel. I contacted management right away and explained what had happened, but they showed no flexibility at all. They refused both a refund and even a voucher for another date, keeping the full payment for a service they never provided, despite circumstances entirely outside my control, force majeure. Hospitality should include understanding for international travelers, but this place chose greed over professional customer service. It was disappointing, and I’d strongly advise travelers to think twice before booking. Save your money and choose a hotel that values its guests.

The canal view and high ceilings gave this little room some charm, and reception was very good. It’s in a lovely part of Amsterdam, within walking distance of local sights. Still, the room was astonishingly tiny. I was there alone on a work trip with a single bed and a lot of luggage, and even getting to my first-floor room meant taking narrow stairs since there’s no lift. The bed was fine, but the bathroom was so cramped I had to leave the shower doors open to sit on the toilet. The shower itself was more reasonable. The TV, bed and bathroom really only suited one person. Thin walls meant I could hear next door, though earplugs were provided and things generally quieted down by 11pm. Maybe a fit for a backpacker or a solo guest with little luggage.

I paid for a deluxe room and was glad to find a comfortable bed and a lovely canal view. The hotel has plenty of period character, and breakfast was delicious with generous portions. For the price, I don’t think you can do better in Amsterdam, and I’ll stay again. I arrived late after a work event, and the friendly staff checked me in and pointed me toward a good place for a nightcap. There’s a lovely pub just around the corner, an easy, quiet and safe walk away. The area felt like real Amsterdam rather than a tourist strip. The location is central but peaceful, though the old building does carry some noise. They thoughtfully provide earplugs, and I slept well.

Absolutely awful. I wish I could give it zero stars, because even one feels like too much. Book this if you want to wreck your trip.
