Hotel Fogo Amsterdam

The shower was a simple pleasure I don’t find often anymore: hot, steamy, and with great pressure. The welcome was perfect, parking affordable, breakfast excellent, and my room perfectly clean. This may be the hotel that delivered in every area. I’d just left several hotels in Belgium and France rated much higher, though they shouldn’t have been. Back in Holland, I wondered if Hotel Fogo was a gamble because it was so budget-friendly, but I was amazed. After trying several places that rated themselves far above what they delivered, this was easily my best value in Europe. I’ll be here a few more days before we head out on a five-star cruise on the Rhine, so I understand service at both ends. If anything changes drastically, which I doubt, I’ll repost. For now, I couldn’t be happier.

The price was amazing, the staff super friendly, and the rooms very nice. The hotel is a little out of the way, but in Amsterdam you can get almost anywhere by train, tram, or metro, so that wasn’t a problem at all. Highly recommend!

We stayed four nights, and the staff were very supportive and understanding. The hotel is non-smoking, which made the stay better. Our cozy room was well maintained, and the cleaning crew made the beds every day, so it was pleasant to return to. The water pressure was good and the area was cleaned regularly. Sometimes we could hear conversations from the neighboring rooms. Matterhorn tram station is within a five-minute walk, though don’t trust Google Maps for this. It’s about 20 minutes by tram to Lelylaan station. There aren’t many places to eat nearby apart from McDonalds.

When I opened the door, a staff member filmed me on a phone without explaining or giving notice, which left me very uncomfortable and feeling that my privacy had been violated. Reception said they had heard a fire alarm and assumed someone was smoking, although I don’t smoke at all. I’d chosen this hotel to celebrate a special day for my wife, but the room wasn’t clean to standard or properly prepared. The front desk also wasn’t attentive or professional in handling our concerns. Their poor judgment and unprofessional response spoiled what was meant to be a joyful, memorable occasion. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone who values privacy and respectful service, especially on an important occasion.
