Hotel Multatuli

The room was lovely and really comfortable, and the hotel is a great base right by Amsterdam Central Station. It did get too warm, but opening the window sorted that out. In winter, that’s hardly a complaint.

We’d happily stay here again. The staff were friendly and glad to suggest things to do, and it’s a clean, straightforward base for couples exploring the city. Our room, 231, had big windows overlooking Central Station, which we opened so we could sit and watch people. There was enough space, the bed was large and comfortable, and the small bathroom had a decent shower. City traffic can be heard, so light sleepers might want earplugs. Breakfast was good enough to set us up for the day. You book a time with reception, from 7-8, 8-9, 9-10, or 10-11, so it didn’t feel crowded and food was always available. There were bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and toast, plus cereal or granola, yoghurt, croissants, fruit, sliced meats and cheese.

The room was acceptable, but the checkout interaction overshadowed the whole stay. Walter said he was a manager, and the front desk staff member said her name was Yara, though that could have been a lie. Both came across as immature and unprofessional. Their lack of courtesy, perspective and basic humanity made the experience unpleasant. There are plenty of other good places nearby, including RHO and ibis, whose staff are much more professional. Do yourself a favour and avoid this hotel. The front desk staff were ridiculous, creepy and weird, with no basic manners.

The location is the only good thing about Hotel Multatuli. The room was freezing because the radiator barely worked, and the bathroom floor was so slippery that I fell twice. That felt dangerous. WiFi was very weak and mostly didn’t work, so for the money, it’s definitely not worth it. The reception staff always look so angry too. You can see on their faces that they aren’t happy.
