Kalkmarkt Suites

Tobias and his mom were really nice, and I loved meeting and petting their nine beautiful cats. Tobias also gave us lots of recommendations, and they left little chocolates on the bed and in the kitchen for us. The room looks great and has plenty of space for practical, independent travelers who mainly need somewhere nice to sleep. There's a sofa, a functional kitchen, a fridge, great Wi-Fi, good toilet and bath, and power outlets all over. It's right in front of a tunnel. We'd come back and recommend it to others.

The basement room opens straight onto the street, so passersby can make some noise. The street isn't busy, but light sleepers might want earplugs. There's a bit of damp, which you'd expect in a basement beside a canal. The location worked well for me. It runs much like an Airbnb. The operators communicated clearly and met me when I arrived. My room was clean and well equipped, with tea, coffee, snacks, a small kitchenette for cooking, and a comfortable bed. I was very happy there and would return.

This was one of our worst stays, and nothing like we expected. The smell from the nine cats was unbearable, and cats were roaming up and down the stairs the whole time. Is she really a breeder? This is supposed to be a place for guests? The stairs were far too much, and I had to breathe in that cat smell throughout the stay. There was no TV, and on the last day the electricity went out, so we couldn't have a hot shower. I had to board a nine-hour flight without showering or having breakfast. Absolutely disgusting.

The suite is in a great spot, within walking distance of most sights, yet the street outside is quite quiet. We stayed in the basement apartment, which had everything needed for a short visit to Amsterdam. At that price, it's an easy recommendation!
