Sphinx Hotel

The kind gentleman who let us check in early deserves a star, but I had mixed feelings about the stay. The location was excellent and the price was affordable, though for $300 a night I expected better. It’s an old house converted into a hotel and felt cozy at first, but there was no sound insulation at all. We could hear everything from other rooms. There was also no cleaning at any point during our three nights. Worse, the fire alarm’s battery was dead, and at 4am a staff member knocked on our door to ask about its beeping. They should have checked it before assigning the room.

For Amsterdam, this is an affordable option, though it isn’t cheap. The hotel is clean, well located, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Each room has its own toilet, which is a good deal for the price since the other places we found in Amsterdam for the same amount only had shared bathrooms. The decor and fixtures are quite old, so don’t expect anything fancy. There’s no elevator and the stairs are narrow, so I was glad we packed light. If you just need a place to sleep, it’s perfect.

The location made exploring Amsterdam easy, right by the metro, trams, markets, restaurants, and the Heineken museum. We stayed for a week, and the service was super attentive and friendly. The place is very organized, with cozy, very clean rooms and an extremely comfortable bed. Just note that there are stairs to reach the rooms if you have mobility issues.

We stayed with my family in a five bed room and had a really great time. It was clean, had enough room for us, and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was clean and had all the amenities.
