After three stays, I won’t be coming back. At EUR 600 a night, this just isn’t worth it, especially when there are more welcoming hotels for less. My six day stay started with a very small room that had no proper windows. When I asked to switch, they said it wasn’t possible. The manager eventually moved me after I insisted, but by then I already felt unwelcome and in a bad mood. The rooms and hotel constantly smell of sewage, and the rooms on the Duchess side smell of oil or fried food. Breakfast is a mess and average, the rooms are too small and dark, and there’s no real consideration for ambassador loyalty. Cleaners shout loudly in the hallways, and the staff experience is hit or miss. Some are friendly, others seem disengaged and uninterested, especially at Mr Porter and Duchess. At 8am a staff member came into my room while I was asleep. He wasn’t dressed like a cleaner. Instead of leaving when he saw me, he stood there for a few minutes until I shouted at him to go. No apology or explanation.

We booked a 45 minute massage but got only 45 minutes instead of 60, with 15 minutes spent selling extras and explaining the treatment. The massage itself was far from a normal massage. The quality was the lowest level I’ve ever experienced, especially for a hotel of this standard. Management should hire professional massage therapists. It costs 2.5 times more than going elsewhere, but the quality is awful. Not impressed.

The location is perfect, and the hotel staff are great. The building is split across both sides of the road, and where we stayed has unusual split levels that felt a little disorienting but fun. I wasn’t keen on the modern rooms: the toilet looks like an orange isolation cell, and the sink sits right in the middle of the room. The bar on the sixth floor has a very cool view, but service was slow, several spirits were out of stock, and the terrace closes at 10:00 PM. Seriously?

Daan at the front desk made check-in easy and was especially welcoming. I had a very pleasant stay on January 18th and would come back, hopefully to try some of the amenities I missed this time. One small thing: there was an occasional odor from the shower pipes, so adding a scent treatment might help.

Being right in the middle of everything was great, and the staff were all so awesome. I loved the old bank turned hotel, it’s beautiful and eccentric in the best way. The rooms were spacious, with excellent canal views, and the showers had seriously great water pressure. W Amsterdam blew me away. I’ll definitely be back.
