Hotel Mastbosch Breda

The restaurant was a nice part of the stay, and the staff were friendly. The rooms, though, felt mediocre and were cold.

We’ve stayed here several times and plan to return. The building is old and grand, set by the forest on the city’s edge, with lovely gardens and outdoor spaces. The rooms are enormous, and bikes are handy for getting into town. On this visit we were given an upgrade without asking: the garden view was fantastic, and there was even a fun sauna in the bathroom. The restaurant is nice, too.

There’s a lovely little square about a ten-minute walk away, with shops, cafés, a poke bar, an ice cream place and bars serving what looked like great food. It had a really nice atmosphere and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The hotel is beside a wood, so there are pleasant walks and cycling nearby. We didn’t go into central Breda. A free car park sits across the road in the woods and is easy to miss, which may matter if you see how little parking there is right outside the hotel. We had two rooms: the double was lovely, but the single was cupboard-sized, and its spa bath didn’t work. That’s why I’ve taken off a star.

The service felt lazy. We sat through a three-and-a-half-hour dinner and only got offered drinks once. The menu was odd and complicated, though the food itself was alright. Breakfast wasn’t anything special either, and nobody brought tea or coffee even though it wasn’t busy. Our comfort plus room was nice, but the double bed was really two singles with a gap between them. We were also put directly above a party, and only heard about it by email after booking. The music and noise carried on until 1:30 at night. We’d come for a birthday.
