Die Port van Cleve

The shower was modern, while the rest of the place had an old-fashioned Dutch feel. I suspect it's kept that way on purpose to preserve the traditional house. It was a sweet place and otherwise great, though a little outdated. The price felt high too, but in a city like this, it's hard to find a hotel much cheaper.

It's been many years since I stayed here, but I remember feeling right at home and having a wonderful time with one of the owners. My room had a lovely view and was convenient for the railway station, while still having that old Dutch character.

The service was excellent. The attic rooms get hot, so the windows have to stay open, but the church bells ringing every 15 minutes were too much and kept me from sleeping. In winter, it would be fine, since you could shut the windows and block out the sound.

This is a classy old establishment near the harbor, the railway station, and the town center. It's had recent renovations and is now under experienced new management, with updated lodging, good quality, and good service. The food is excellent, though it isn't cheap. Enkhuizen is an important international center for the vegetable and flower seed industry, and the hotel has long welcomed many international visitors. Traditionally, it has also served as the main meeting place for local seed growers and traders. Well worth a visit.
