Hotel Iron Horse

I had to leave and book somewhere else at my own expense, which cost another 400 euro and took an entire day out of my trip. The room I was given had visible mold on the walls and smelled as though somebody had just put a big dump in there. I contacted reception right away, but got no help, room change, support, or compensation. The hygiene and customer service were both so poor that I can’t recommend this hotel. I have plenty more pictures, but this should be enough to show what it was like. I’d also say the good reviews are probably 99% fake. KEEP AWAY! Read this before booking.

The room was awful for such a high nightly price. Dirt marks covered the walls, and the air conditioner didn’t work. They seemed to know, since there was a dingy fan in the room, but it barely helped in the hot summer. Our shower drain was clogged. I reported it and was told it would be fixed, but it never was while I was there. It felt like the hotel had given up.

Angela, Bianca, William, and Khalid made our very enjoyable stay at the Iron Horse Hôtel. They were professional, kind, and extremely accommodating, and knew Amsterdam well. They took time to answer our questions and explain where to go and how to get there. The room was clean, very nice, and spacious enough. Free coffee in the room and at reception was another welcome touch. The hotel is conveniently placed near several important Amsterdam sights. I highly recommend it and would return without hesitation.

The location is good, and I wasn’t asked for a deposit, just city tax at check-in. Bags left before check-in sit unsecured in the lobby, though. There’s no elevator, the stairs are narrow, and amenities are poor: no fridge, cheap shampoo and soap, and only a tiny paper cup in the bathroom instead of a proper glass like at other three-star hotels. The toilet seat moves, as other reviews mention. I found several hairs on the sheets and near the toilet, but didn’t report them. Cleaning seemed subpar. The doors slam shut, apparently by design, so there’s not much you can do about that. Rooms get stuffy, especially with no AC, and the bed is so soft you sink into it if you’re even slightly overweight. I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it, though it seems hotels in Amsterdam around this price have some of these problems, so know what to expect.
