Hotel Oostereiland - Gevangenis Hotel

There were about 20-30 spiders and webs in our small room when we checked in around 12pm. A friendly woman at reception said they would be dealt with, but when we returned from dinner at 10:30pm, the original spiders were still there and even more had appeared. My fiancé killed a few, then we went back downstairs. I have health issues and couldn't risk being bitten by an unknown spider while on vacation from America. Reception was closed, so we called the hotel number. The owner answered and yelled at my fiancé, insisting the spiders weren't a problem and had been cleaned up. When my fiancé said we couldn't stay, the owner accused us of lying and said that killing some spiders had left marks on his ceiling. He was dismissive, unreasonable, and aggressive. We gave management a chance to clean the room and were met with rudeness and disrespect instead. The room also smelled like stale standing water, had no AC, and was very small. The concept is cool and could be amazing, but the dirty rooms ruin it. We've stayed at hotels all over the world and across the Netherlands on this trip. My fiancé is originally from here, and this was an awful, sad way to end our trip. I'll dispute the charge and file complaints with local tourism boards. I highly don't recommend this hotel. If I could give it zero stars, even that would be too many.
