Hotel 't Anker

The location was good, and we could walk to all sorts of places. But we expected a bad stay and the reality was even worse. Like other guests, we found mice in our room. We were told, "it's an old building and I never heard of that happening here". We did get moved to another room, but its bathroom regularly smelled awful. In the first room, the shower barely worked, and the hole in the bathroom ceiling felt weird.

I stayed there two years ago. The price was like a five-star hotel in Sapporo, even though a five-star hotel in Japan is cheaper than this barn, no offense to actual barns. The place had a poor 1950s look, cigarette smoke, and noise from the cafe until midnight or later. The bathroom was shared.

The beds seemed clean and were comfortable enough, and we liked the quiet neighborhood, simple hotel, and friendly service. We were fine with there being no soap. But in the morning I saw all the clean mattress covers lying on the dirty ground.

This is a no-frills budget hotel that works for groups watching their spending. The staff were friendly and breakfast was included, though very basic. Our room was worn but functional and clean. Expect shared facilities and noise between rooms. Two stars because it's a two-star hotel.
