The apartment had a very high score on Booking, which helped persuade us to reserve it 22 days ahead. Instead, our reservation was cancelled without our consent just two days before check-in, with “overbooking” given as the reason. There was no prior discussion, further explanation or apology. The day before the cancellation, the hostess had emailed detailed entry instructions and ended by saying, “We are looking forwards to welcome you as our guest!” The place only has this one apartment, so the claim that it happened to be overbooked in low season on the exact day of our stay was hard to find convincing. During nine days of travel in the Netherlands, we’d never had such an awful experience. If something went wrong, the hosts could have contacted us earlier or at least given us a straightforward explanation. We’ve travelled to 35 countries, including eight trips to Europe, and understand that unexpected things happen, but we expect honest, sincere communication and mutual respect. The hosts failed to show that.

This was a lovely place to stay, much better than a hotel. The one-bedroom apartment was spacious and well equipped, in a great spot for exploring this beautiful city. There were thoughtful little extras too: mints and toffees on the table, a full bowl of fruit, water in the fridge, plenty of teas and coffees, and large mugs with hot chocolate ready to make.

We were told to leave the apartment at 22 PM because we’d brought our two-year-old, whom we’d forgotten to add to the booking. The owner was extremely unfriendly and didn’t want to refund our money. Bookingcom fortunately gave us a 50% refund voluntarily because they felt bad about what happened. I’ve never had such a bad experience. I can’t recommend staying here. For the same money you can get a nice hotel room in Leiden and avoid spending the night on the street.

We’d paid and arrived, but couldn’t check in because we hadn’t replied to the owner’s email. We tried calling after we got there, but nobody answered, and we didn’t get our money back. The owner was very irresponsible. I lost the money and was marked as a no-show, so I couldn’t leave a review on bookings. I suspect most of the bad ratings get blocked by the owner this way.

The hosts were really nice, and the apartment was comfortable and well equipped. It’s close to Leiden train station and the centre, with a pleasant courtyard to sit in. The bed was comfortable too, and the bath was amazing.
