Van Heeckeren Hotel

The lighting was a problem in the King Suite at Strandweg 17. The bedside reading lamp and living room lamp couldn’t be controlled with their own buttons, so turning them off meant using the master switch and leaving the whole apartment dark. Worse, the suite was very poorly cleaned when we arrived, with dust everywhere. We’re sensitive to allergens, which made it especially difficult. We told the team, but they didn’t offer help, so we cleaned the apartment ourselves. We booked it for a weekend and left feeling the company didn’t care about customers and was just after the money with little effort. We can’t recommend them and will stay elsewhere next time, though we still love the island.

The staff are still good and sweet, and always available. But after staying here for the fifth time in four years, I feel it’s gone downhill. I used to feel more welcome. Now it seems more focused on making money, with bottles of wine being sold at reception instead of offering warm water for tea or coffee as before. That’s sad. The towels also weren’t very clean.

We had a wonderful experience at the hotel. The suite was comfortable, and check-in was very easy. The friendly Galician woman who helped us made us feel welcome. Everything about the stay was amazing.

The staff were friendly, and breakfast was excellent, with fresh fruit, smoothies and different egg options. The rooms were lovely too.
