Hotel Dux

This was my second stay, and I'd gladly return. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, the service was excellent, and breakfast was simple but nice. Reception welcomed me warmly and helped me find the parking area by giving me its precise location. I did run into a problem when I wanted dinner at the restaurant. It was fully booked, and I hadn't been told in advance. The receptionist apologized several times and said she'd tried to arrange something, but the restaurant couldn't fit me in. She was kind about it and suggested other options, including an app for ordering food.

The underground parking on level -1, with its car elevator, was a big help with our rental car. We picked Hotel Dux because it was the closest hotel to Roermond Designer Outlet, where we were shopping, and breakfast was good, if not outstanding. Sadly, that was where the good points stopped. The check-out receptionist was the only staff member we met who smiled. The person at check-in seemed as if she didn't want to be there, and breakfast staff were neither friendly nor welcoming. Management should address this. Room cleaning was mediocre, and the towels were very worn. It was only one night, but I wouldn't come back. I'd give it 2.5/5 if I could.

The rooms themselves deserve five stars: they're spacious, nicely laid out, and look toward the little street and river. The location is also handy for the outlet, city centre, and nearby restaurants. But the rude, uninterested and unhelpful service takes two stars off. The rooftop bar isn't open to the public or hotel guests. With the windows open, noise from the street, bars and restaurants makes sleeping difficult. Closing them blocks it out. Restaurant DO and the hotel seem too separate. We had a very nice waiter and waitress the first night, and you can eat outside in the evening, but breakfast was fairly mediocre and can't be eaten outdoors. When we asked about sitting outside even just for coffee, staff were indifferent and reluctant to unchain the tables and chairs, then locked them up again 30 seconds after we got up. It felt like we were interrupting their chores, even though we saw them scrolling on their phones several times. When we asked about the rooftop bar, the response was simply that it wasn't available, with no explanation. Staff argued when we pointed out that it was listed on the hotel site and hotels.com, making it sound like our fault.

The breakfast food was delicious, and the staff were very professional. Great place to stay.
